Nurture Your Hair + Mind with the Ancient Practice of Ayurvedic Head Massage
When I first discovered Ayurveda, this was naturally one of the first treatments I began to practice regularly. This might have something to do with the immense benefits of massaging the scalp - as I later learned - as well as the Marma points found at specific sites on the head to induce a deep state of relaxation and to offer excellent stress-relief.
Couple this with a fantastic way to ground and bring balance to vitiated Vata dosha (related to our mind) and an absolutely fantastic (not to mention, cost effective) hair conditioner and Voila! It is still one of my favourite Ayurveda therapies. Don’t underestimate the power of a good weekly Head Massage (called Shiro Abhyanga).
Like many of us in our current cultural climate, we can be prone to stress and anxiety which is commonly (though not exclusively) related to Vata dosha. Head Massage is one way we can not only help to calm our mind - applying oil to the scalp also acts as a natural tonic for our hair, promoting hair growth and strength when applied all over the hair following a Head Massage.
Before coming to Ayurveda I had been trying to grow my hair for many years and it seemed to be “stuck” at a particular length. Over a few years of ritualistically giving myself a self Head Massage with oils like Organic Black Sesame Seed Oil and herbal formulas such as Brahmi Hair Oil, my hair began to grow!
There aren’t really any rules for an at-home Head Massage - apply the oil to your scalp, massaging over your whole head with warmed oil, then you can smooth it through all of your hair, tie it up (if you have long hair), leave it in for 40 minutes to an hour, then wash it out.
For all the tips and tricks, book in with me for an Ayurveda Consultation, or come and experience a traditional Ayurvedic Head Massage for yourself - I offer Head Massage as part of every Ayurvedic Massage.
NOTE: Hair breakage or hair loss can also be due to a variety of internal factors so if you have these issues, which is why it’s best to book in and see a Practitioner.
