Ayurvedic Guidelines for Nurturing Sexual Intimacy + Emotional Health

Let’s talk about sex.

Cosmic ecstasy is a natural aspect of your divine nature.

How can you can maintain your sexual intimacy without depleting yourself - especially your shukra, or vital sexual essence?

The ayurvedic perspective on sex enlightens us with some guidelines and principles, which at the foundation are about enhancing sexual pleasure, sexual & emotional health as well as fertility.

The Ayurvedic tradition not only celebrates sexuality, but recognizes that our sexuality enhances physical and sensual pleasure by promoting emotional intimacy. Sexual intimacy with a partner can even bring individuals to experience their own divinity through physical union. The Ayurvedic perspective on sex can help us to appreciate the power of our inherent sexuality, and how to temper our sexual desire with wisdom and moderation to support our health.

Unlike other traditional yogic lineages which might expound the benefits of celibacy, or brahmacharya, in reality those even in ancient times who took a monastic vow to remain celibate for spirtual purposes were few and far between.

Brahmacharya is often translated to mean abstinence from sexual actions & thoughts. However in the Ayurvedic context it can also denote the voluntary regulation of sexual energy and desires. In Ayurveda, this refers to acceptance of ourselves and our sexuality, but at the same time honouring our responsibility to understand and regulate our sex-drive - especially if we are in a commited long-term monogamous partnership. On the other hand, if our sexual instinct is forcibly suppressed, it can lead to mental pervesions, psychological imbalances and physical disease.

From a disciplined indulgence in sex through bramacharya, one gains memory, intelligence, health, nourishment, sharpness of the sense organs, reputation, strength, and long life. - Ashtanga Hridayam

Exercising choice in this divine right to expressing our sexuality in the context of spirituality, is knowing it’s our god-given right to pleasure, purity of passion and permission to play and enjoy this worldly journey! The difference between a one-night stand for sexual indulgence and instant gratification, versus disernment with our sexuality and expression through self-respect, self-control is that the latter can become a path to ultimate freedom, or moksha

The balanced path of moderation in our sexual expression is an important aspect of each of our lives and facet of our health in Ayurveda - one in which can often be overlooked with your health care practitioner.
